Part 2 - Speed Dating Questions - What to Talk About During a Speed Date!

<< Return to Main Page —or— Go to Next Page: Speed Dating Links >>

We went over some basic speed dating tips in part 1, now it's time to go into greater detail about having unique, interesting conversations during your speed date.

Don't Ask the Same Questions As Everyone Else!
As we mentioned in part 1, it is very important to set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd at a speed dating event. If you ask the same questions as the other daters, your conversations will likely be forgettable. By the end of the event, people will be tired of answering the same questions about their job and hobbies! So we'll offer some suggestions of how you can initiate a unique and engaging conversation.

After sitting down at the table and introducing yourselves to each other, look at your date and say something along these lines (playfully, with a smile):

"I don't know about you, but I have a feeling that I'll be exhausted at the end of the night from answering the SAME questions over and over again!

So, I've decided not to ask you what kind of job you have, or what you like to do fun. Instead, I'm gonna try to get a feel for your personality, based upon your answer to a hypothetical question."

So at this point, you've caught her attention and set yourself apart from everyone else. You're also demonstrating that you're interested in getting to know her personality instead of just being interested in her for her looks. It will make the woman feel like she needs to impress you, instead of you trying to impress her!

Now you can ask her a fun, hypothetical question. Try to relate it to some of your own interests (sports, music, travel, etc.), so that you can extend the conversation after she answers the question. Here is an example:

"Let's suppose you get a phone call tomorrow morning telling you that you've won a free trip anywhere in the world to watch a musician of your choice perform in concert. Where would you go, and which artist would you see?"

After your date answers the question, you can take her answers and use them to fuel the conversation further. For example, if her response to the first question is "I'd see Nickelback in Japan", you can reply several different ways:

"Japan, eh? That's interesting... I don't know much about Japanese culture, but I LOVE sushi - it's one of my favorite things to eat! What is it specifically about Japan that you're drawn to?

"Nickelback? Hmm... for some reason, I figured you'd be more of a Justin Bieber fan. ;) Do you mainly listen to Rock, or are you into other styles of music as well?"

From this point, you can just allow the conversation to develop naturally, by taking her answers and forming new questions from them. It's always good to have about 3 or 4 questions prepared so that you have stuff to talk about in case the discussion slows down. Try to steer the conversation to fun topics that will get her to talk about things that she didn't discuss with the other daters. Things like "favorite childhood cartoons", "weirdest halloween costume you wore as a kid", etc. Another strategy is to have a few interesting news stories ready. Maybe you read an article last week about a monkey who taught himself how to ride a bike, or a man who lived for 6 months without eating any food.

Keep the conversation going and before you know it, the 5 minutes will be over. You'll probably leave on a high note, and she'll be left wanting to continue talking to you!

Conveying an Interesting, Unique Personality is Most Important!
Above all else, the most important thing is to demonstrate that you have an interesting, unique and fun personality. It doesn't necessarily matter what you're talking about, it's all about delivering it in a positive, fun way. Smile, be playful, speak with confidence and don't be afraid to tease your date. If you need to, don't be ashamed to practice in front of a mirror beforehand - whatever it takes to ensure that you'll be confident on the night of the event. Good luck!

Here are a few more hypothetical speed dating questions that you can try asking:

1) "If you had one month left to live and an unlimited amount of money, what would you spend your time doing?"

2) "If you could live the life of any famous person (past or present) for one week, who would you be?"

3) "If your boss told you that you could be transferred to work in any country in the world, where would you go?"

4) "If your house was on fire and you only had enough time to save 3 items, which 3 things would you pick?"

5) "If you could create a dream job where you got paid to do something that you're extremely passionate about, what would that job be?"

6) "If you could choose any 2 famous people (dead or alive) to be your parents, who would you pick?"

7) If you were hosting a dinner party, what kind of meal would you cook for your guests? What kind of dessert would you make?"

8) "If you could travel back in time and grow up in any point in history, which would you pick?"

9) "If had the chance to possess one of the following superpowers, which would you prefer: being invisible, being able to fly, or being able to read people's minds?"
